FIFTY-NINE

There were eighteen peanuts left in the dish. Mark and his brother looked at each other.

Mark knew his brother would want to count them out evenly, but also knew Grandma would insist they both just grab a handful. He was older, he’d get more.

His brother went first — and used both hands.

Mark ended up with five peanuts.
