A few days ago on NPR (see above link) there was a story about a new kind of home for the elderly, outside of the traditional Nursing Home model. Each of the Green Homes houses up to 12 residents, and each has a private room and bath. Nurses assist in all aspects of the day, but there are no set schedules, no “necessary” activities. Residents in these homes maintain independence and live happier lives. And the cost is about the same as the average cost of a nursing home, through medicaid.
We seem to fear growing older, but I think we fear loneliness and isolation more, we dread the idea of being forgotten, or just becoming another invisible slice of someone’s life. Well, hopefully the Green House Project can influence people to CARE more about their elders, and each other, in the long run. Just make people happy!
